Northumberland edged higher-seeded Westmoreland, 2-1, to win the Northern Neck District girls soccer championship on Thursday, May 18.
“This was an excellent match by two evenly matched teams,” said NHS coach Mark Fridenstine. “Both teams fought for every ball and worked well. The Indian forwards did a great job passing and making opportunities.”
After a 0-0 lock at the half, Camdin Sisk got Northumberland on the board first with a goal at the 47-minute mark. Two minutes later, Westmoreland’s Cailah Shannan tied the game, and with only nine minutes to play NHS left forward Ashton Burnes sent a cross to Sisk, who pushed through the game-winning goal.
