Northumberland pauses plan to change due date for local taxes

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland board of supervisors on Thursday, February 10, stalled a plan to move to a November 5 tax due date for real estate, personal property and machinery and tools. Tax payments are currently due by December 5.

In a 5-0 vote, the board agreed to table the discussion and decision until the March 10 meeting. District 1 supervisor James Brann, District 2 supervisor Richard Haynie, District 3 supervisor James Long, District 4 supervisor Thomas Tomlin and District 1 supervisor Ronald Jett all voted in favor.

Jett said the issue “needs a lot more consideration. It’s changing a lot just to move the due date 30 days when we don’t know how much it’s going inconvenience people.”

The date is not the issue,” Tomlin said. “The issue is we have a cash flow problem…..
