Northumberland places second and Lancaster, fourth, in state golf tourney

After losing to Lancaster in back-to-back district and region tournaments, the Northumberland High School golf team saved its best round for state play. 

The Indians shot a 343 as a team to finish as the state runner-up in the Virginia High School League  Class 1 championship October 9 at Great Oaks Country Club. 

Amanti Starks shot a 7-over-par 79 to lead NHS. Teammate Tre Booth, individual medalist in both the Northern Neck and Region 1A tournaments, shot an 8-over-par 80. 

Starks finished sixth among the 60 individual golfers and Booth was seventh. 

The top two teams received trophies and top 10 individuals received medals. 

Lancaster’s Leyton Dew just missed a medal, shooting an 82 to finish 11th on the mountainous course in Floyd County. 

Galax shot a 317 to repeat as the state champion and Walker Gillespie of Giles High School shot an even par 72 as the Class 1 individual medalist. 

Auburn was third with 353, and Lancaster finished in the middle of the eight-team pack in fourth place with a score of 355…..
