Northumberland schools present updated spending plan to supervisors

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland County School Board on Thursday, February 29, presented its updated proposed fiscal year 2024-25 budget, including a number of “efficiencies,” to the board of supervisors.

Director of finance Tara Booth provided a detailed presentation of the proposed $23,147,438 budget. According to Booth, the school board and finance committee were able to adjust the proposed budget for 2024-25 to a lower number than previously presented through a number of efficiencies.

Booth described a major cut to the budget coming from removal of several positions on the payroll. She said they were able to remove $51,619 for para-professionals and additional salary amounts with the elimination of an emergency medical services (EMS) teacher position at the high school as well as a dual enrollment math instructor at the high school.

Nearly $3,000 in additional cuts were made regarding elementary and middle school learning materials.

Booth said they were also able to cut a bus driver position from the transportation budget.

However, due to several funding cuts and despite the recent efficiencies, Booth indicated the school budget as proposed would need to rely on the county for an additional $1.581 million increase over last year’s….
