KILMARNOCK—Oliver Dawson Crane, 82, of Kilmarnock passed away January 14, 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Costello Crane; sons, Keith (Beverley) of Conway, S.C., Jeffrey (Judy) of Dumfries and Samuel (Jessica) of Kilmarnock; a brother, Earnest Crane of Flint Hill; and a sister, Onile Salisbury of Front Royal; several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John S. Crane and Amber James Crane; three brothers and three sisters.
After graduating from High School, Oliver served four years in the Marine Corp. He then moved to Alexandria and worked for the Alexandria Police Department as corporal for 29 years. Upon his retirement in 1992, he moved to Kilmarnock, where he worked for Noblett for 10 years.
He was a member of Kilmarnock Baptist Church and served on many committees. He loved to cook and helped with the preparation of church dinners and became known for his homemade yeast rolls.
He was a member of the Disaster Relief Team and went on several missions. He was also an “honorary member” of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department where he was active until 2015. Oliver helped to run the food stand at the carnival for many years as well as other responsibilities.
He also liked to fish, hunt, and garden. He shared his home-grown tomatoes with many in the community.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 28, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Kilmarnock.
