OTTOMAN—Roland Walker Courtney, 91, of Ottoman passed away peacefully at his home on January 10, 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hilda C. Courtney; his sons, Roland W. Courtney, Jr. of Hernando, FL and Allan Courtney of Ottoman, VA; grandsons James Courtney of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Lt. Morgan Courtney (US Navy) of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughters, Taylor Marshall (Tyler) of Brandon, Fla., and Addie Courtney of Oceanside, Calif.; and brother, David Courtney of Sun City, Ariz.
He is predeceased by his parents, Howard and Katheryn Courtney; brothers, H.T. Courtney Jr. and Cecil Courtney; and sister, Mary S. Courtney.
Roland was a painting contractor in the Northern Neck for over 40 years. He was a member of Corrottoman Baptist Church. As a young man, Roland worked on the Old Bay Line before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Korean War aboard the USS Missouri.
Roland was an avid outdoorsman with a great love of baseball, field trials and quail hunting. Among local people, he was known for his abilities in fishing for grey trout and for growing his beloved strawberries. He had a fondness for bluegrass music, playing cards, old dogs and little children. Roland was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and neighbor.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, January 15, at Currie Funeral Home. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 16, at Corrottoman Baptist Church with internment following in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Barnes, James Courtney, E O Harding, Emerson Harding, Tracy Lewis and Tony Reynolds.
