It took nine innings and a strong pitching effort by Ben Pittman but Lancaster toppled the Northern Neck District giant May 2, upsetting the Region A’s top-seeded Essex, 3-0, in varsity baseball.
The Trojans were riding a 14-1 record, with the only loss coming to Class 2 Jamestown the day before they faced the Red Devils.
Lancaster is 11-6 but had lost to Essex, Rappahannock and Colonial Beach on its first run through Northern Neck District play. The Devils were riding the momentum of another 9-inning upset over Rappahannock, 1-0, on April 26.
