Retired Rear Adm. Raymond N. Winkel

EMERSON, IA—Raymond Norman “Ray” Winkel passed away on August 29, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer’s. He was born December 8, 1928, in Muskegon, Mich. 

In 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1948, he was commissioned ensign and designated naval aviator. He served in various assignments advancing through the ranks to rear admiral. During his career of 34 years, he was awarded the Decorated Legion of Merit, Air Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.

After retirement, he and his wife, Ellen, moved to the Northern Neck, settling on the Great Wicomico River. Both enjoyed being active in the community, sailing the river and bay, and traveling. They were members of Indian Creek Yacht Club, various sailing clubs and the U.S. Power Squadron. Ray joined Experimental Aircraft Association, U.S. Naval Institute, Military Officers Association and Kiwanis.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Ellen Stefula Winkel, who died in 2005.

He is survived by his children, Raymond Norman Winkel (Tammy), Ann Roth (Jim) and Maryellen Moye (Jim); two grandsons, Jay Darby and Bob Roth; and his companion and dear friend for 15 years, Anna Roelofsen.

At a later date, Ray will be buried with his wife, Ellen, at Arlington National Cemetery.
