Sharon B. Courson

LANCASTER—Sharon Bess Courson, 72, of Lancaster County passed away on February 15, 2024, at home with her beloved husband of 24 years, Miles, by her side.

Sharon led a remarkable life filled with adventure and love. As a sea captain, she navigated the waters with skill and grace, building and sailing her cherished 72-foot steel hull schooner, The Sharon Virginia. Her passion for the sea led her to explore waterfront festivals along the east coast, creating lasting memories wherever she went.

Later in life, Sharon found joy in farming, dedicating 30 years to organic farming at Locusville Farm. She had a green thumb and nurtured her garden with care, especially adoring her black irises. Sharon’s love for nature and the land was evident in every herb, vegetable and flower she grew.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and William Bess; and her brother, Billy.

She is survived by her loving husband, Miles Courson; her daughters, Virginia Leslie and Georgia Courson; and her sisters, Marilyn Callis and Betsey Williams.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on March 16 at Belle Isle State Park in Lancaster. Sharon will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the memories she created with her family, friends and community.
