
KILMARNOCK—Charles N. Carlson of Northumberland County passed away peacefully on January 31, 2024, in his home surrounded by loving family. He was born January 25, 1926, to the late Tyler Newton and Lucy Garnett Carlson.
Charles lived a full life, leaving behind cherished memories for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings Lewis, Mitchell and Hilton Carlson, as well as his children Fred (Betty) and Steve Carlson and Candy Hatley.
He is survived by his son, Carl Carlson; and daughter, Renee Carlson-Coleman. Charles also leaves behind his grandchildren, Aiden and Luke Coleman, Chris (Shae) and Holly Carlson, Texi Rowe, Dawn Trotter (Troy), Tiffany Vann (Troy) and Joe Carlson; great-grandchildren Derk and Zack Trotter and great-great-grandchildren, Bruce and Elijah Trotter to carry on his legacy.
Throughout his life, Charles pursued various interests and was a successful entrepreneur. He owned and operated Saluda Livestock Market and Carlson’s Auto Sales. He found joy in working with cattle and discussing cars with potential buyers. Charles had a love for riding horses that he shared with family and friends. He was proud to have been a donator of nearly eight acres to the Youth Club of Lancaster County. Today that plot has grown and is known as Dream Fields.
Those who met Charles will remember him as a “sharp dressed man” who always wore cowboy boots. He has been described as dignified, proud, honorable, a “man’s man” and a gentleman who held a huge presence in a room. Charles will be dearly missed but will live always in the memories of those who loved him.
A celebration of life to honor Charles will be held at 2 p.m. March 9 at Hermitage Baptist Church on Wares Bridge Road in Church View. Following the service a reception will be held in the fellowship hall where friends and family can come together to share stories and celebrate Charles’ life.
