Skipjack inspection turns up historic gem

REEDVILLE—When working on a 114-year-old wooden boat, no telling what one will find.

Three U.S. Coast Guard and one civilian marine inspector recently examined the classic skipjack Claud W. Somers at Jennings Boatyard in Fairport. The vessel, owned by the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, will undergo a $100,000 refit over the winter.

In particular, they were looking at selected fasteners (nails) that hold the boat together. These are inspected every five years. The inspectors worked from a diagram developed from a prior inspection so different fasteners could be examined, said CWO2 Graham Jacobs.

Volunteers from the museum’s boat shop and the Somers crew pulled 16 fasteners from below the waterline to….
