It’s an iconic red roofed structure on Cockrell Creek in Reedville, situated at the end of the road, on the end of the peninsula at the last piece of land before entering the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
Many a boater has stopped to photograph this little spot of Americana as they sail by it on the water or try to get a shot from the road. It’s been there as long as most residents can remember. But most folks here today don’t actually know much about it. Without these little fish houses, watermen can’t get their catch off to where it needs to go. And you just don’t see lots of “working” fish houses these days.
Stan Obier owns this picturesque pier. The hard work that goes on under this red roof might be the reason you have fresh fish on your table tonight or at one of the local eateries. It was once called Reedville Seafood. Today it’s named Reedville Steamboat Wharf with a nod to its original, historical beginnings as….
