Teamwork nabs burglary suspect

URBANNA—There is a saying in law enforcement, “The police have to be lucky once, but the bad guys have to be lucky all the time.”

Luck ran out for DeSean Montreae Byrd in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 30, when he was arrested by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), reported Major M.E. Sampson. He is charged with six felonies in connection with burglaries in Urbanna and more charges could be pending since the investigation is ongoing.

Since mid-November Urbanna has been plagued with more than a dozen burglaries to businesses.

About two weeks ago, the MCSO developed a surveillance strategy involving all deputies and investigators.

The MCSO put together two- and four-person surveillance teams that were stationed within the Urbanna town limits.

“This was a total team effort involving the entire office including investigators, deputies and school resource officers,” said Sampson. “Sheriff’s office personnel worked around the clock.”
