Track and field champions, Lancaster boys track team shines at state meet

The Lancaster High School boys track and field team brought home the bling last weekend and did it with state record flare.

The Red Devils scored 80.5 points, produced three individual champions and had its junior thrower set a new Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 1 record in the shot put—and claimed its second VHSL state team championship in five years.

The Devils, under the leadership of head coach Draper Washington and assistants James Timm, Markus Ferguson and girls head coach Joanne Webb-Fary, last won the state title in 2019. Since there was no state meet in 2020, the Devils’ win at James Madison University in Harrisonburg June 2-3 actually means LHS has claimed two of the last four Class 1 trophies.

And it was truly historic,” said Webb-Fary, “because they placed in every single field event. I don’t think we’ve done that….
