Fireflies
The Bulb Shoppe at Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, 7900 Daffodil Lane, Gloucester, will present Fun with Fireflies from 10 a.m.-noon August 20. Youth may engage in games and lessons, make crafts and explore the gardens.
Participants should bring their own water bottles, masks and beach towels. The fee is $10 per child, ages 6 and older. To register, call 693-3966.
LCL hours
The Lancaster Community Library is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Attic Bookstore will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Visit the library on Facebook, lancasterlibrary.org, or contact the library at 435-1729 ext 18.
Wearing a mask will be required per state requirement, with exceptions for those with medical or other conditions or children under the age of 10. Additional protocols will be followed.
On the creek
Enjoy music at Fish Hawk Oyster Bar at Tides Inn, 480 King Carter Drive, Irvington, performed by local artists from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through September, weather permitting.
Something different Duo will be featured August 12 and Toby Gilley Trio, August 19.
Open studio
Artist Brenda Sylvia will conduct Open Studio painting from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays through August 26 at the RAL Art Center, Pike Studio, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock. Tabletop easels will be provided and Sylvia will monitor, draw, paint and offer suggestions and encouragement.
Fees are $20 for members and $25 for others. Social distancing will be observed and masks will be required. For reservations, call 436-9309.
Paint night
RAL Art Center, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock, will host an Adult Paint Night from 6:30-8:30 p m. August 27. The project will be “Anchor’s Aweigh.” The artist/instructor will be Doug Mock.
The fee is $30 for members and $35 for others and includes all materials. Participants are reminded to bring a beverage, snack and mask. For reservations, call 436-9309.
Piano jazz
The Tides Inn, 480 King Carter Drive, Irvington, will offer a piano bar Fridays and Saturdays through Labor Day, from 6-8 p.m. in the Chesapeake Restaurant and 8-10 p.m. in the View Room.
Sip on an after-dinner cappuccino, a decadent cordial or a favorite cocktail while listening to jazz piano performances by resident musician Eric Lyttle. The piano bar is complimentary for resort and restaurant guests.
Scavenger hunt
The Northern Neck Tourism Commission and 18 area museums and historic sites are conducting a Northern Neck Heritage Area Scavenger Hunt through August 31. To enter either contest, visit northernneck.org/nnkroadtrip for a full description of the rules.
An on-the-road trip version asks participants to photograph a specific view or item at each site. Photos must be posted to the museum’s social media with the hashtag, #nnkroadtrip. An online version invites participants to find answers to specific trivia questions posed by each site. Participants will search the organizations’ websites to find the answers to complete the questionnaire and post it at northernneck.org/nnkroadtrip.
Visit NPL
The Northumberland Public Library (NPL), 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, is open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays thorugh Thursdays, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays.
Curbside service is available to anyone who does not want to come into the building. NPL offers all regular services since returning to normal hours. The meeting room is open on a limited basis.Call 580-5051.
