Annual meeting
The Friends of Northumberland Public Library will hold their annual meeting at 5 p.m. today, September 5 at NPL, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
The agenda will include reports on the various accomplishments of the organization, Ye Olde Book Shoppe and the library for the previous fiscal year. The Friends are looking for new board members.
SAR luncheon
The Richard Henry Lee Chapter, Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution will meet Tuesday, September 10, at the Bayne Conference Center, Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems. A social period will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. The speaker will be Dr. Brian S. Latell, former member of the CIA and the National Intelligence Council who specialized in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Wine & Whiskers
Garfield’s Rescue Inc. will hold Wine & Whiskers from 5-7:30 p.m. today, September 5, at Trinity Episcopal Church Pavilion, 8484 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster. The event will offer wine, hors d’oeuvres, music by Paragon DJ, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Family stories
Historian and genealogist Lori Jackson Black will present “How to Tell Your Family Story” at 7 p.m. Friday, September 6, at Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. Black will discuss basic research techniques, share helpful hints, review ways to efficiently compile family data, story and photographs and publish them.
Bluegrass night
The Waterview Bluegrass Band and other musicians will play bluegrass and country music beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 7, at the Urbanna Firehouse, 335 Virginia Street, Urbanna. Donations are appreciated for the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary.
Crab feast
The Northumberland County Community Center, 679 Browns Store Road, Heathsville, will host a crab feast from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, September 7. In addition to all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, the menu will include fried chicken, fried fish, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, baked beans, homemade soups, tea and water.

Sweet harmony
Bill and Pam Gurley will be in concert Saturday, September 7, at Flat Iron Crossroads, 7709 Flat Iron Road, Gloucester. They will be joined by their daughter, Macon, as well as Jimmy Masters.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the show will start at 6:30 p.m. Food and drinks will be available. Tickets are $18 and may be purchased at flatironcrossroads.com, or at the door.
Chorale season
Chesapeake Chorale rehearsals for 2023 Christmas concerts will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Mondays through mid-November, beginning September 9, at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street, Kilmarnock. No audition is required to join this mixed-voice community group.
Woman’s club
The Woman’s Club of Northumberland County, 2928 Northumberland Highway, Lottsburg, will meet Tuesday, September 10. A social gathering will begin at noon, followed by the meeting at 12:30 p.m.
Black Tie & Boots
Black Tie & Boots will be held at 6 p.m. September 27, at State Fair of Virginia, Meadow Hall, Meadow Event Park, 13191 Dawn Boulevard, Doswell The gala offers dancing, dining, auctions and cocktails.
Gala tickets can be purchased at StateFairVa.org. Tickets are $150 per person through September 14. Proceeds will benefit youth through the State Fair of Virginia Scholarship Program.
Bay concerts
Concerts by the Bay will present Alter Eagles at 3 p.m. September 15 at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium, Mathews High School, 9889 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews.

RCA concerts
The Rappahannock Concert Association will open its 41st concert season at 7:30 p.m. September 21 at the Northumberland County School Performing Arts Theater, 201 Academic Lane, Heathsville. The six-concert series will begin with the Crown Mountain Trio Classical Ensemble.
There are four ticket purchase options, reserved seats for the six concerts, $135; regular seating for all six concerts, $110; any three of the six concerts, $70; a single concert ticket, $35. Christmas show
The Kilmarnock Museum recently announced a bus trip to the Old Dominion Barn Dance Christmas Show on December 14 to see Wilson Fairchild and Hunter Owens. A chartered coach will depart from Chesapeake Commons in Kilmarnock at 11:30 a.m. and return by10 p.m. A nonrefundable $135 fee includes roundtrip fare, seats to the show and snacks on the bus.
The bus will stop for dinner on the return trip at Nick’s Spaghetti and Steak House in Shacklefords. Dinner is not included in the fee. To reserve a seat, call Mary Brent, 238-8738, or Ashburn, 296-0930. Cash or checks payable to Kilmarnock Museum is expected at time of booking.
Boots and Barbecue
Boots and Barbecue to benefit Northern Neck Land Conservancy will be held from 1-4 p.m. September 28 at King Copsico Farm on the water in Westmoreland County.
The event features a barbecue buffet, music and exhibitors and demonstrations that reflect the rural character of the Northern Neck. Tickets are $50 each. To become a sponsor or purchase a ticket, visit nnconserve.org.
Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
Antique quilts
“Threads of Our History: Quilts of Mathews Virginia,” will open at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews, on October 5 and will be on exhibit through the end of December.
Beginning October 4, the museum will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of December.
NNO season
The Northern Neck Orchestra 2024-25 season will open October 5 with Dvorak at Lancaster Elementary School, 191 School Street in Kilmarnock. A pre-concert talk will begin at 6:45 p.m. and the performance will follow at 7:30 p.m.
Season tickets for the four-concert series are $128. Single tickets for each concert are $40. Tickets may be purchased at www.northernneckorchestra.org or the door. Students are admitted free.
Senior gathering
Irvington United Methodist Church, 26 King Carter Drive, Irvington, hosts a senior gathering from noon-1:30 p.m. on second Tuesdays. Share lunch, bingo and fellowship.
On Stage
The Rappahannock Foundation for the arts 2024-25 On Stage series will open at 7:30 p.m. October 19 with Dancing Dream, an ABBA tribute band, at the Lancaster Elementary School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock.
