Plant Sale

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society (NNNPS) will conduct its annual Native Plant Sale September 19-October 10 at Dug In Farms, 155 Fleets Bay Road, White Stone.

Plants may be purchased any time the farm is open. NNNPS members will be on site from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays to provide advice in choosing plants.

Bluegrass show

The Honeywind Bluegrass Boys will present a Music by the River concert from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, October 3, in the waterfront picnic area at Belle Isle State Park, 1632 Belle Isle Road, Lancaster. The show is free; however, there is a $5 parking fee.

Picnics are welcome. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and mosquito repellant. Alcohol is not permitted. Face coverings are required in all park facilities and where social distancing is not possible. To confirm show in case of inclement weather, call 462-5030.

Shuck-It-Bucket

Chesapeake Academy, 107 Steamboat Road, Irvington, will hold a Shuck-It Bucket, oyster-roast-to-go event, from 4-6 p.m. October 10. The $60 bucket will include a steamer pot filled with shelled and raw oysters, shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes and a spice kit.

Free trees

The Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), in partnership with the Town of Kilmarnock and Lancaster County, is conducting a free native tree giveaway. Trees will be available for pick-up from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. October 17 at Town Centre Park, 150 North Main Street, Kilmarnock.

Hay bale contest

The annual Hay Bale Decorating Contest sponsored by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Women’s Leadership Committee has begun. Applications will be accepted through November 1.

Guidelines and an entry form are available at bit.ly/2Z6gyMw. Cash awards will be presented for best promotional display for agriculture business or commodity, best promotional display for community spirit, most creative, best agricultural theme and best agribusiness, FFA, 4-H or school display.
