ROXBURY—At 5:02 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, Virginia State Police (VSP) responded to a crash involving a passenger vehicle and an Amtrak train on Roxbury Road, close to a quarter-mile south of Barnetts Road in Charles City County.
A 2008 Lexus ES350 was traveling north on Roxbury Road when it encountered a railroad crossing with the gates and signals engaged, reported VSP public relations coordinator Shelby Crouch. The Lexus drove around the gate arms and was struck by a westbound Amtrak train.
The driver of the Lexus, George H. Haupt Jr., 76, of Urbanna, died at the scene, said Crouch. He was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash remains under investigation, said Crouch.
