Northumberland considers tighter regs on tent camping, utility scale solar farms

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland planning commission on Thursday, September 8, held a special work session to hammer out suggested ordinance changes related to commercial tent camping and utility scale solar farms. The board of supervisors wants the recommended revisions by its November 10 meeting.

According to county planner Stuart McKenzie, “Commercial camping is allowed with a conditional use permit in conservation (C1), agricultural (A1) and waterfront residential (R2) zones, but is not allowed in general residential (R1), restricted residential (R3), recreational residential (R4), general business (B1) and light industrial (M1).” He added, “We don’t want people to live full-time in tents or travel trailers….
