Vestelia Wood

LANCASTER—Vestelia Wood of Lancaster died April 4, 2023.

Vestelia was born in White Stone on November 17, 1948, to the late William E. and Lucy Moody Brown.

She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent from age 13 through high school graduation. She later was a member of Shachah World Ministries of the Northern Neck, where she served as adult Sunday School teacher for many years until her health began to fail.

Vestelia graduated from Brookvale High School on June 6, 1967. She attended Hampton Institute (Hampton University) and later Fayetteville Tech.

Vestelia and her husband, CW2 Thomas S. Wood Jr., lived a military life stationed in two overseas bases (Panama and Germany), and Ft. Bragg, N.C. While in Germany, she worked as a teacher’s assistant in Department of Defense Dependents Schools system. Upon returning stateside, Vestelia worked at Virginia Tech for 17 years before retiring in 2009.

She was preceded in death by her son, Tommy; her sister, Geraldine; and her parents, William E. and Lucy Moody Brown.

She is survived by her husband, CW2 Thomas S. Wood Jr.; son, Troy L. Wood of Durham, N.C.; daughter, Taicha DePriest of Hampton; grandchildren, Elijah, Joshua and Laila; sisters, Louise Parker of Heathsville and Kayla Gill of Lafayette, La.; brother, William “Smokey” Brown of White Stone; and stepmom, Jean Brown of Lake Charles, La.

A service was held April 8 at Campbell Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery, Kilmarnock.
