Chesapeake Academy on March 10 hosted Girls, Gizmos and Gadgets, a science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition.

The event attracted two teams from Chesapeake Academy; one team each from Lancaster Middle School, Northumberland Middle School and St. Clare Walker Middle School; and three teams from Richmond County Middle School. The competition included 34 participants and 17 judges.

The event was sponsored by Virginia Bio and Bay Internist Inc. due to their commitment to girl’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, said Chesapeake Academy head of school Julianne Keese.

Challenge winners included

• Decoding/crytogram, Lancaster.

• Creating a wind turbine, Northumberland.

• Laying density lab, Chesapeake Academy Team J.

• Building a scooter art robot and catapult, Richmond County Team F.

According to Chesapeake Academy science teacher Robin Blake who created the challenges, each activity was timed and the overall winner was established by the most amount of points.

“Chesapeake Academy Team J won this by 20-seconds,” said Blake.

“We were excited by the curiosity and the engagement of the girls. They all want to do it again next year,” said Keese. “This is clearly the inaugural event of something we can do for local girls annually.”
