Northumberland budget tops out at $50.2 million with $0.05 real estate tax increase

HEATHSVILLE—Despite a 4-1 vote from Northumberland supervisors on Friday, June 21, to approve a fiscal year 2024-25 budget totaling $50,201,732, the county still has related work to do, having yet to release a full budget showing revenues and the undesignated funds as of noon Tuesday.

A.C. Fisher, Richard Haynie, James Brann and Chip Williams voted for adoption. James Long voted against because the total does not include additional money requested by the schools.

Annual estimated expenses total $43,957,949, down from the initial $46,241,375 advertised earlier in the month. Estimated expenses by category include general government, $3,466,762; judicial, $1,216,874; public safety, $7,504,574; public works, $2,888,067; health and welfare, $3,077,847; education, $22,263,151; parks, recreation and culture, $320,515; community development, $482,114; and nondepartmental, $2,738,045.

In a 4-1 vote supervisors approved a $0.05 (8%) increase in the real estate tax which is now $0.66 per $100 of assessed value. Long objected. The remaining taxes were approved unchanged….
