Former Lancaster High School standout Troy Henderson plans to play Division 1 basketball at Fordham University in the fall of 2025.

Henderson is the first commit in Fordham’s 2025 class. He chose the New York Catholic University on August 3 over Georgia State, Murray State and Tennessee.

“It just felt like home,” said Henderson of his visit to the Catholic University’s campus in the Bronx. “I canceled my visits to all the other schools.

“Coach [Keith] Urgo was showing me a lot of love, coming to see me play over the summer a lot,” he said.

The Fordham Rams play in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Urgo was promoted to head coach in the spring of 2022 and led the Rams to their best season in over 30 years in 2023.

Henderson plays for the Richmond-based AAU travel team, Team Loaded, and has spent a busy summer on the basketball court in tournaments in Nebraska, Alabama, Texas, South Carolina and Atlanta.

Henderson is no stranger to high school basketball fans as a two-time Virginia High School League Class 1 player of the year. He’s also been named the Northern Neck District and Region A player of the year for three consecutive years and led Lancaster to historic back-to-back Class 1 state championships.

The former LHS guard averaged 25.9 points per game during the Red Devils’ 2023-24 season. He also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.1 steals. His 25.9 scoring average ranked in third in state in 142 nationally.

Before leaving Lancaster, he set a new school career-scoring record, with over 1,800 points in his three seasons with the Devils. The existing record was 1,452 set back in 1999.

Henderson has transferred from Lancaster to John Marshall in Richmond for his senior year.

“The plan was to play two years at Lancaster and then go to John Marshall but the fans and the kids coming up changed that. And we were able to win another state championship,” said Henderson. “Without the community and all the fans’ support I wouldn’t have done what I did. I want to thank coach [Dwayne] Pinn and all my teammates and all the fans.”

Henderson said John Marshall, which has won three consecutive state championships, offers a level of competition that will help prepare him for the next level, both on and off the court.
