Demolition begins along fire-ravaged strip on Irvington Road in Kilmarnock

KILMARNOCK—Nearly 10 months after a fire ripped through a block of businesses and apartments in Kilmarnock’s Steptoe’s District, demolition recently began on the condemned portion of the property.

According to Lancaster County Building Official James Canter, a letter was sent December 8, 2022, to property owner Hay-Be Corporation, notifying the company it had 60 days to demolish the structures that had been condemned by the county. A portion of the block on Irvington Road is salvageable and can be rebuilt, according to Canter.

The fire on April 19, 2022, resulted in one fatality, displaced several residents and five businesses. Two of the businesses….
