There were no big trophies or titles on the line last Wednesday night when the Lady Devils hosted their final game of the season in varsity basketball. Yet, as the final buzzer drew closer, coach Joanne Webb-Fary started to tear up.
Her team, after going winless in the Northern Neck District except for forfeits by Northumberland, won its final game of the year, 56-50, over Washington & Lee to finish at 3-7 in the district and 7-12 overall. Lancaster won’t advance to the regional tournament.
“The obstacles—low numbers, injuries, COVID-19 pause and inexperience—were the factors that led to wavering confidence,” said Webb-Fary. “They were ‘in’ many of the games but just couldn’t pull it all together for wins.
“In the final game, they really showed confidence and fortitude….
