Native plants

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will host a meeting and program from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Center Drive, Kilmarnock.

Native plant landscape designer Denise Greene will address ways to incorporate native plants into the landscape. She also will review the planting conditions many face locally and offer suggestions on native trees, shrubs and perennials that thrive here.

Magic 8 Ball

George Steeves will return to the Westmoreland Players Theatre, 16217 Richmond Road, Callao, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23.

A documentary film about the making of Steeves’ hit one-man show, “Magic 8 Ball, My Life With Asperger’s,” will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Admission is free. Seating will be first come. A cash bar, desserts ($2 each), and coffee ($1) will be available.

Student drama

The Lancaster High School/Lancaster Elementary School Drama Club will present “Channeling Grimm” on March 22 and 23 at the Lancaster Elementary School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock. The curtain will go up at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for those younger than 14.

In the play, Cameron is having difficulty completing an assignment for honors English about the Grimm fairy tales. When friend Jaime suggests using TV versions of the tales and Cameron points the remote at the TV, he finds the wackiest fairy-tale themed shows. The teens discover commercials, “Project Ball Gown” and “The Green and the Beautiful,” among other shows.

Benefit breakfast

The Northumberland County Lions Club will serve breakfast, eat-in or take-out, from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Bethany Baptist Church, 16256 Richmond Road, Callao. The menu will offer pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, grits, biscuits, sausage gravy, breakfast meats, coffee, orange juice, water and milk.

Donations will support children’s playground equipment at Hometown Community Park in Callao. The suggested donation for adults is $15 per person and for families, $25.

Author talk

Mystery writer S.A. Cosby will be featured at an author talk at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Essex High School Auditorium, 833 High School Circle, Tappahannock. Essex Public Library will sponsor the presentation by Cosby. He will speak about his life and work, followed by a question and answer session and a book signing.

The event will be free. Copies of the books will be available for purchase at the book signing.

Easter meals

The Cooks Squad will prepare meals to go March 30 for reheating on Easter Sunday. The menu will include oven roasted spiral honey baked ham, scalloped potatoes, buttery carrots with dill, broccoli casserole, hot cross buns and pound cake with fruit.

The fee is $15, or complimentary to Northumberland County seniors, ages 75 and older, on first sign-up basis. For reservations, call 494-9534 or email [email protected] by March 24. Reserved meals will be available for pick up from noon-3 p.m. at MidCounty Volunteer Rescue Squad, 7990 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

Eggstravaganza

Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, and the Northern Neck Lodge 32 of the Fraternal Order of Police will host Easter Eggstravaganza from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 30.

Easter activities will include crafts, jellybean guessing game, face painting, yard games and the Easter Bunny. An Easter egg hunt will begin promptly at 11 a.m.; a hot dog lunch will follow.

Chicken dinners

Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.

Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.

Appraisal event

The Woman’s Club of Northumberland County, 2928 Northumberland Highway, Lottsburg, will host Clutter or Collectible? with Henry Lane Hull of Commonwealth Antiques & Appraisals Inc. at 12:30 p.m. April 9. Desserts and beverages will be served. The fee is $20.

Guests may bring up to two items for appraisal. Acceptable items include toys, dishes, books, glassware, paintings and bric-a-brac.

RCA concert

The Rappahannock Concert Association will present the Two Rivers Chamber Music Quartet at 7:30 p.m. April 13 at the Northumberland County School Complex, 201 Academic Lane, Heathsville. The quartet plays an extensive repertoire from Bach and Mozart to the Beatles and film scores.

Admission is by season subscription, a Pick 3 subscription for the remaining concerts for $60, or $25 for the single performance. Purchase tickets at 888-210-8006 rappahannockconcerts.org, or the door. Students are admitted at no charge.

Chamber series

The Northern Neck Orchestra (NNO) 2023-24 Chamber Music Series will feature Quartets for Voice and Strings at 2 p.m. April 14 at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock.

Admission is by season subscription, or $35. Tickets may be purchased at www.northernneckorchestra.org or at the check-in desk. Students are admitted free.
